Working the Night Shift Disrupts Gut Function, Study Reveals

 

Shiftwork can wreak havoc on gut function, throwing it off kilter as many as 12 hours, according to a new study by Washington State University's Sleep and Performance Research Center. The night shift also disrupted the  rhythms of two metabolites linked to chronic kidney disease. 
 
Armed with this information, the Sleep and Performance Research Center plans to design future studies to explore ways to minimize the effects of mistimed sleep and meals.
